Cymbal Production

The final shape and distinctive tonality of the Custom, Professional, and Percussion range is determined by various styles of hammering. Depending on the series this may be accomplished by hand hammering, a hydraulic hammering device, or by computer controlled high-tech hammering. |
||
Meinl has developed computer software especially for use in manufacturing Custom Cymbal Shop Cymbals.
An imprint is taken of a hand hammered cymbal and becomes a catalogued Custom Cymbal Shop model.
Each hammering hit that the cymbal smith performs by hand is recorded into the computer program.
A laser sensor measures the exact position, depth, and angle of impact as well as the sequence of all hammering marks.
|
||
Using this data, our modern computerized hammering unit is able to exactly reproduce the sound and quality of the original hand hammered model,
over and over again.
Lathing & Finishing: Next, the cymbals are lathed either by hand or machine in order to produce their typical surface and the precise tuning. |
||
Unique to Meinl Cymbals are the different surface finishes available for the Custom Cymbal Shop.
The Champagne´64 finish is especially very time consuming to apply. Millions of tiny glass beads
are projected onto the surface of the cymbal.
All Meinl Cymbals in Brilliant finish are polished by hand |
||
A super thin layer of protective lacquer seals the cymbal surface.
After a thorough quality inspection of all cymbals, they are stored in order for the metal to "relax".
When this storage period has been completed and they have been tested a final time, the instruments -
established as Meinl quality "Made in Germany" - are ready for delivery worldwide.
